Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) is a networking term that defines the largest packet size that can be transmitted over a network interface. MTU plays a crucial role in ensuring efficient data transfer and overall network performance. A correctly configured MTU size helps minimize packet fragmentation, which can lead to reduced throughput and increased latency.
¶ Exium’s SASE Solution and MTU Configuration
Exium’s Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution is designed with flexibility in mind, enabling users to optimize network performance across various devices and deployment scenarios. Exium's agents on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Chromebooks, and Linux utilize a higher MTU size of 1420 bytes to maximize throughput while staying compatible with the widely used network MTU of 1500 bytes. This configuration accounts for the 80 bytes of encryption overhead, maintaining efficiency without sacrificing security.
Despite this optimal MTU setting, certain deployment scenarios may require adjustments to ensure compatibility and seamless operation. For instance, when agents are used in conjunction with other VPNs, site-to-site tunnels, or when mobile tethering (hotspotting) is employed, the presence of additional overhead from these intermediate entities may necessitate a lower MTU size.
¶ Adjusting MTU for Optimal Performance
To address these situations, Exium allows administrators to adjust the MTU size to as low as 1280 bytes. This flexibility ensures that users can maintain connectivity while accommodating the overhead introduced by other networking components, thus enhancing compatibility and operational continuity.
- Navigate to the MSP admin console : Go to "Companies" and select the desired company name, or access the Customer/ Client Workspace Sign In directly.
- Click on “Configurations” followed by “MTU”
- Check “Yes” for “Enable Lower MTU” to accommodate other VPNs, site-to-site tunnels, or when mobile tethering (hotspotting)
- Click “Update"
